To become a player in the Southern Senior Hockey League, you must fill out the form below, review and agree to the details listed. This electronic form serves as your player signing form and agreement to the player deportment policies for the league and HNB. 

Please note all players within SSHL are considered amateur players and are to receive no compensation for play. All monetary and other forms of repayment for expenses must adhere to the rules and regulations with Part III 1.15 Player/Team Travel Expenses. Any player/team staff found to be not adhering to these guidelines will face sanctions including losing eligibility to play in the SSHL and potential fines to their team.

SSHL is a registered league under Hockey New Brunswick (HNB). Once you are added to the roster of one HNB team as a player (not an affiliate), you cannot play for another HNB team without first being released by the first team. You acknowledge you understand by completing this form you are expressing your interest to solely play for the team listed above.

Player Awareness

As a league we want to make sure our players are aware of all guidelines that may impact them.
1.12 RULES OF DEPORTMENT
a. To foster reasonable behavior, to enhance sportsmanship and to make competition a developmental experience, the SSHL requires and expects its players and Fans to meet minimum standards of conduct.

b. The members of this League will not condone nor encourage harassment, abuse, bullying or misconduct on or off the ice.

c. CHA behavior modification penalties will be implemented. In exceptional circumstances, the Vice- President & President may impose additional penalties.

d. In any team situation, in or around ice surfaces, dressing rooms or arenas, proper behavior is expected of the SSHL players and coaching staff.

e. SSHL members must not post harmful statements on social media sites. Comments or remarks of an inappropriate nature which are detrimental to a Team, the SSHL, League, or an individual will not be tolerated and will be subject to disciplinary action. All members, volunteers and players must adhere to the social media policy as laid out by HNB

f. The use of any form of cell phone, camera, video camera, camera phone, or any other personal digital accessory capable of photographs is prohibited in any recreational facility change rooms during any SSHL sanctioned event.

g. Coaches and managers are expected to strenuously enforce this guideline in each category from Initiation to Senior. (The standard of what is acceptable is what is deemed acceptable in the presence of anyone).

h. Consumption of alcoholic beverages or drugs (including cannabis), tobacco (vape pens) by players or coaching staff in a game or practice situation, or arriving inebriated in such a situation, is grounds for immediate dismissal.
HNB Social Media Policy
1.12 Team Responsibilities for Off-Ice Conduct and Fan Safety
The Southern Senior Hockey League is committed to providing a safe environment for our players, coaches, volunteers and fans. The on-ice safety of players and staff is managed by applying Hockey Canada, Hockey New Brunswick and SSHL rules and regulations. These include the assessment of suspensions according to Hockey Canada minimum standards. When it comes to off-ice safety, while there are instances where officials may assess penalties, the ultimate responsibility in this area falls to the league and teams.

After recent incidents and reports from multiple teams of growing altercations and confrontations off- ice, we feel the need to remind teams of the following:

  • All players and team officials are expected to maintain their self-control through the entire game event. This includes their behaviour on the ice and behaviour off the ice.
  • If a player or team official is ejected from a game, they are expected to retire to the dressing room and not return to the bench area.
  • If the player/team official who is not playing or has been ejected from the game enters the spectator area, they must maintain their distance from their opponent's bench. They should also not engage in negative yelling or harassment of opposing team players, fans or officials.
  • There shall be no negative interactions between opposing players/team staff in the dressing room area. This includes but is not limited to, verbal confrontations or attempts to engage in a physical confrontation.
  • The harassment of Officials by players or team staff in the spectator area is unacceptable.
  • Any form of off-ice confrontation between players, team staff and fans is entirely unacceptable, whether verbal or physical.

    We are asking all teams to remind their players of the points above. Whether on the on-ice in their jersey or present in the stands at any SSHL event, they represent their team and our league. We expect everyone in our league, including our fans, to behave respectfully.

    In future, the following disciplinary framework and process will be applied for any reported or observed off-ice incidents.

    Reporting
    Off-ice incidents should be reported to the league disciplinary group in a timely manner. This can be done via email to incidents@southernseniorhockeyleague.ca. We are also offering an anonymous reporting form on the league website, found here: https://southernseniorhockeyleague.ca/incident- reporting-form/

    Please be aware that reports will be taken seriously. They will be tracked by the league executive and investigated. The reporting process should not be abused and if it is found someone is fraudulently reporting incidents, disciplinary steps may be taken at the discretion of the league.

    Verbal reports to any member of the league executive must be followed up by reporting in writing.

    Investigation
    Whether reported directly via email or through the anonymous form, all off-ice incidents will be investigated by reaching out to the team manager/coaches involved, any identified players or others who may be able to provide necessary insight. This process is not about applying blame but gaining a complete understanding of the factual situation of the incident.

    Outcomes/Tracking
    Outcomes of investigations of off-ice incidents will be shared with the involved teams/players and documented by the league disciplinary group. Depending on the incident, a summary may be shared with all teams. Please remember that depending on the incident scope, HNB may be notified if required, according to the HNB constitution. All reported incidents will be tracked by the league executive and details will be kept recorded for 2 full seasons following the incident.

    Sanctions
    If, based on the outcomes, the league disciplinary group decides that an offence was committed by a team (i.e. involving multiple members of a team(s), guidelines not being followed by the team overall, etc.) instead of an individual player/coaching staff being solely accountable, the league may apply the following team sanctions.

    1st Team Offence
  • 1 Game Suspension to Head Coach
  • $250 Fine - If there are no further incidents during the season, the fine will be refunded

    2nd Team Offence
  • 3 Game Suspension to the Head Coach
  • A $250 Fine is forfeited.
  • An additional $500 Fine will be applied if there are no further incidents during the season; the $ 500 fine will be refunded

    3rd Team Offence
  • Indefinite Suspension to Head Coach
  • A $500 fine is forfeited.
  • Team status, including coaching and management group, will be under full review.

    Please remember that the league reserves the right to apply suspensions directly to players/team staff if it is found an incident solely involves individual players/team staff. This process follows a similar investigation process, and suspensions will be based on a case-by-case basis.

    Appeal Process
    Any appeals will follow the standard appeal process referenced in the SSHL constitution under PART III – RULES AND REGULATIONS SECTION 1 - OPERATING PROCEDURES 1.10 Appeals.
    • 1.15 PLAYER/TEAM TRAVEL AND EXPENSES
    The SSHL does not allow teams to pay players. We recognize that player expenses can be reimbursed.

    SSHL Expense Reimbursement Policy
    a. Teams are free to reimburse players who have spent their own money for Hockey-related expenses. When players receive an expense reimbursement, typically they won’t be required to report such payments as wages or income to CRA.

    b. These types of reimbursable expenses tend to occur when players travel for practice or games but can be associated with other activities related to their participation, including, for example, certain purchases of hockey -related supplies or equipment.

    c. Teams are required to track and report to VP finance all reimbursed expenses. League will monitor to ensure fair and proportionate expenses are paid to players in an equitable manner.

    d. If teams are found to be abusing or misusing this policy knowingly, they may be sanctioned by President. Any player found to be receiving monetary or other compensation not related to approved expenses will no longer be eligible to play in the SSHL for the remainder of the season. Any coach found to be compensating a player through monetary or other forms not related to approved expenses will be suspended for the reminder of the season and the team will be fined $1000 by the league. Sanctioned teams may appeal President’s decision to full BOD.
